Gaya is an ancient city found on the bank of the holy Phalgu River known as one of the holiest river in Hindusm. Gaya derives its name from the mythological demon Gayasur (which literally means Gaya the demon). According to Vayu Purana, Gaya was the name of a demon (Asura) whose body was pious after he performed rigid penance and secured blessings from Vishnu.
It was said that the body of Gayasura was transformed into the series of rocky hills that make up the landscape of Gaya.
It is a town of religious, cultural, historical and archaeological importance, in these deep forests that Ram, Sita and his brother Lakshman spent 11 years 6 month and 27 days during their fourteen years of exile. Chitrakoot is a place where Goddess Ansuiya originated Mandakini River by her power to fulfil thirstiness of her husband sage Atri.
Sati Anusuya ashram is in Chitrakoot. Sati Anusuya ashrama, at present is a very peaceful place where various streams from the hills converge and form the Mandakini River. It is said that Rama along with Sita had visited this place to meet Maharishi Atri and Sati Anusuya.
Sage Narada praised Anusuya in his hymns and verses, for making the wives of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva jealous. They requested their husbands to go and tempt her away from her husband, breaking her pativrata. The Divine Trinity went to Anusuya as guests when Atri was not at home and asked her to serve them lunch in the nude. She agreed, but first splashed them each with enchanted water, turning them into small children. These all history related to chitrakoot.
This is the place where lord Rama appeared to Tulsi Das after devotion. Here a holy mountain “Kamadgiri parvat” It is Hindu belief that by taking a round of this mountain they get saintly.
